Lens Compatibility

Canon Lens Mounts

The easiest way to find out which lenses your camera will accept is to look at the lens mount index on the front of your EOS camera. Simply remove the lens from your camera by pressing the lens release button and twisting the lens anti-clockwise. Canon cameras have four mount types.

RF and RF-S

If you see a red line on the lens mount, your camera is an R System mirrorless and is fully compatible with RF and RF-S lenses. EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses can also be used with any of the EF-EOS R Adapters.

EF

If you see only a red circle on the lens mount, your camera is a full-frame DSLR and is compatible with EF and specialist TS-E and MP-E lenses.

EF-S

If you see a red circle and a white square on the lens mount, your camera is an APS-C DSLR and is compatible with EF-S, EF, TS-E and MP-E lenses.

EF-M

If you see a white circle on the lens mount, your camera is an EOS M series APS-C mirrorless and is fully compatible with EF-M lenses. EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses can also be used with an EF-EOS M Adapter.

RF

Created for R System cameras, RF lenses offer higher quality, speed, and operation thanks to outstanding optical technology and design. The EOS R System's unique 12-pin connection radically improves communication between the camera’s lens and body, making it faster than was previously possible. The RF lens mount is 54mm wide with a shallow depth from the mount to the sensor. The design allows lenses to be closer to the sensor, enabling the creation of faster, brighter, higher-quality optics with unsurpassed performance. RF lenses have improved video capabilities, plus neat touches like the control ring and more compact size.

EF, TS-E, MP-E

The original EOS camera system was introduced in 1987. At its heart was the Canon EF lens mount, connecting lenses to the camera body in a fully electronic way for the first time. Apart from the physical connection between these two components all communication is electronic, allowing for highly accurate, real-time data transfer. Canon became the first to build the motor that drives the focus inside each lens, rather than using a motor inside the camera body. Even with continued development and evolution of focusing systems, Image Stabilizer technologies, specialist lens elements and weather sealing, the original EF mount design remains unchanged. TS-E and MP-E specialist lenses have an EF mount. All EF mount lenses are compatible with every EOS camera ever produced, including the new EOS R System and EOS M series when used with the appropriate lens adapter.

EF-S

EF–S lenses are specifically designed for EOS DSLR models with a more compact sized sensor – delivering lenses that are lightweight, versatile and supremely portable. With the EF–S range, Canon’s engineers took advantage of the APS–C sensor size to produce lenses that are not only lighter and smaller, but also offer photographers far greater wide-angle choice. Lightweight EF–S lenses are available in a wide range of focal lengths, extending from 10mm to 250mm (16mm to 400mm with 1.6 crop factor taken into account).

EF-M

EF-M mount lenses were introduced with the original EOS M range of cameras in 2012. Even more compact compared to the EF and EF-S range they are designed exclusively for use with EOS M series cameras. Offering a range from ultra-wide to telephoto to macro they’re portable enough to take everywhere, they’re a great choice for those taking a more creative approach to everyday photography. Compact EF–M lenses are available in focal lengths extending from 11mm to 200mm (17.6mm to 320mm with 1.6 crop factor taken into account).
